P272 is the industry given name for the mandatory change of electricity meters in classes 05-08 (maximum demand meters) that affects over 100,000 UK Business. Meaning, From 1 April 2017, your Business will be billed in a new way. Currently, your supplier is billing you based on a single read, which gives your supplier your annual consumption, leading to an industry-agreed calculation based on your meter class. This then gives your supplier an indication as to when they think you use electricity. Therefore, your electricity bill is simple but not a true reflection of when your Business really consumes electricity.
Going forward, thanks to the P272, Businesses on 05-08 meters will automatically read every half hour, over the full year, providing your supplier more accurate data. As a result, your bill becomes more accurate, but more complicated and new charges may also appear.
